AMA: Fishermen say no to illegal fishing

It is now obvious that the campaign by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture development to halt illegal fishing practices is gradually being embraced by the fisher folks.

This came to light when the various fisher folks composed songs to educate their colleagues about the dangers of such practices and also to praise the government and fisheries Ministry for the bold and courageous efforts at dealing with the illegal fishing menace that is causing serious harm to the ocean and their fishing business.

 

 

The joy and approval of the fight against illegal practices was expressed when the sector Minister, Elizabeth Afoley-Quaye joined groups of Fishermen in James Town to mark this year’s Homowo festival. Fishermen from various communities in Greater Accra including Osu, Gbegbeyisse, La, Ngleshie, Oshiye, Chorkor, Kokrobite, Kinka Ga Mashie, Bortianor came together to mark the day with competition in canoe racing and swimming.

 

 

Addressing the people, the Minister was delighted that majority of the fishermen have agreed they will no longer engage in illegal fishing. She noted “the beauty of it is that we are bringing the minds of government to the door steps of the fisher folks to really understand what we expect of them”.

 

Madam Afoley-Quaye added that the messages contained in their songs attest to their approval and expressed hope that those who are still secretly engaging in such practices will sooner than later stop the practice.

 

 

She emphasized that the country’s fishing stock is fast dwindling, and the measures put in place are meant to reverse the trend and ensure the people practice sustainable fishing to protect and improve on the fishing stock.

 

She also hinted that the Ministry will continue to develop closer tie with the various fishing communities and use that relationship to drive home their messages.
