The items mainly rice and oil are to help the fishers cope during the one-month period that they are banned from engaging in any fishing activities in the sea to help the country regain its depleted fish stocks.
The Ministry is set to distribute over 15,000 bags of rice across the four coastal regions in the country.
Sector Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson who supervised the distribution with support from her team from the Ministry at the James Town commended the fishers for the law-abiding spirit that has made the closed season a successful one.
She assured them of efforts to provide them with subsidized outboard motors which are already available in the country, and ready for distribution, as well as approved fishing nets to ensure they make the best out of the business when the fishing season is opened in August.
She also reminded them of the need to continue to adhere to the various management practices adopted to preserve the fishing industry, particularly they should desist from the use of monofilament nets, light fishing, and the use of other hazardous chemicals for fishing.
She stated that Ghana had the unpleasant experience of being issued a Yellow Card in 2013, and if it was reversed, the industry would have suffered dire consequences. As such, they as industry players must operate within the confines of the fishing laws to prevent the country from facing similar sanctions.
