Far Ban Bo project launched in Accra

To address the challenges of overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices including illegal unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, low compliance and work capacity for law enforcement within the sector, the Far Ban Bo project has been launched.

Far Ban Bo is an EU four (4) year fisheries governance project which means ‘’ Protecting Fisheries Livelihoods’’.

 

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to sustainable fisheries resources management to improve Food Security nutrition and livelihoods of smaller holder fisheries and other users of fishery resources.

 

Ms. Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye delivering the key note address said government places important emphasis on agriculture including fisheries due to its contribution to the economy.

 

 

To this end, she disclosed that government will among other things
1-    Ensure availability as well as effective and transparent distribution of the premix fuel to fisher folks;
2-    Eliminate import duties for fishing inputs;
3-    Enforce the fisheries management policies;
4-    Continue with the building of Landing sites and storage facilities;
5-    Restore the Korle Lagoon;
6-    Develop inland fishing across the country;
7-    Promote the local production of fishing nets; and
8-    Support fish farmers and artisans in the Northern Ghana.

 

She noted that the results areas of the project fall within the mandate of the Ministry and complement the effort of the Ministry and other initiatives such as the World Bank funded West African Regional Fisheries Programm (WARFP) and the USAID funded sustainable fisheries Management Project.

 

The sector Minister urged all agencies and institutions implementing various fisheries projects to ensure coordination to avoid duplication of efforts and to leverage resources for the fisheries industry.
