SAWLA: Assembly holds meet the press forum

District Chief Executive of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, Lawal Tamimu has asked duty bearers to be accountable to the people who have put them in the position of trust from time to time; and it is on the basis of that that the president found it prudent for his appointees at the lower level to meet to account to the people of their stewardship during the almost three years of the NPP administration.

The DCE announced that since the assumption of the government many developmental projects have been initiated to help better the lives of the people. Suffice to mention a few ranging from water and sanitation, education, health, agriculture, human resource development among others.

He stated that the Government Special Initiatives is an attempt to better the lives of the people by boosting production and creating jobs for the teaming youth and as a result several interventions and initiatives have been created to help accelerate growth and transform the economy. Some of these initiatives the DCE said include the 1v 1d, 1 million dollars per constituency and the 1d 1f as well as the planting for food and jobs, rearing for food and jobs among others.

He said under the 1 village 1 dam about ten[10] dams are at various stages of completion to benefit various communities, have so far been initiated in the district, some of the beneficiary communities he said include; Nasoyiri, Jentilpe, Sawla, Digzie, among others. He, however, said his attention has been drawn to some challenges with regards to the construction of the dams in some communities, this he said has been reported to the appropriate authorities and a team from the Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation have so far visited the affected sites for possible remedies.

Honorable Lawal Tamimu said on agriculture that to ensure food security and reduce cost of importation of food items, government had instituted a number of policy interventions in the sector which he said includes; planting for food and jobs, planting for fruits and export, rearing for food and jobs and subsidy on fertilizer, adding that with respect to the rearing for food and jobs, the department of agriculture has distributed about 595 cockerels to interested farmers on pilot basis which he said will be scaled up in subsequent years.



The DCE added that 700 mini bags of NPK fertilizer were received by the department of agriculture and sold to farmers at a subsidized price through registered input buyers. This the DCE noted will help heavily bring relieve to most farmers and also boost their food production and increase their income as well also.

Honorable Tamimu, said six[6] motorbikes were received by the Department of agriculture to improve agric extension service delivery and other activities. He, however, said that while waiting to licensed and distribute the motorbikes, unfortunately, two of them were stolen from the stores and the police have since been investigating the matter.

The DCE reported that the Assembly has put in place a programme to renovate the schools that have been ripped off by rainstorms whiles renovating old and dilapidated ones like the D/A primary school in Sawla, the Changbaliyiri D/A Primary School, Korle Primary School and the Jentilpe JHS block.

To help address the furniture situation in the district the DCE said the Assembly has supplied 250 dual desks whiles planning to procure more for distribution to the various schools in the district. He pleaded with parents to complement the efforts of the Assembly by supporting their wards to improve on their studies. He said the Assembly in collaboration with the Nation Builders Corps has recruited and posted a number of graduates to help in teaching in the various schools to help improve upon teaching and learning.

The DCE used the opportunity to thank O9XFAM for supplying computers and other gadgets to establish E-Library at the Sawla Girls Model School to access information around the world. He added it will go a long way in improving teaching and learning in the district, he added also that some teachers have been trained in the school and it is expected that they will also train other teachers in the district to enable other adjourning schools to also benefit from the facility.



On LEAP programme, the DCE said his administration inherited 25 beneficiary communities and has expanded it to include 14 more communities, bringing the beneficiary communities to 902 people benefiting from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty [LEAP] programme.

He said the district performance assessment tool [ DPAT], that the management and staff have worked very hard, thereby coming up successfully with a score of ninety-seven [97] percentage score, he therefore used the opportunity to celebrate with the management and staff for the spectaculars performance that will bring huge investment funds to come for development in the district.

On the occasion of the pending District Level and Unit Committee and referendum on December 17, 2019, the DCE said government is intending to take critical decisions with respect to the governance architecture of the country and this he said cannot be done without affecting some changes and amendments to the supreme law of the land the 1992 constitution.

In this regard, he said there is a need to organize a referendum to allow the general public to agree or otherwise to the amendments since the clauses in question are entrenched in the constitution. He also used the opportunity to update all on the issues at stake saying the YES vote means the Amendment of Article 55[3] which will allow for political parties get involve and also sponsor candidates to contest for district assembly and unit committee elections at the local level and also allow for the election of MMDCEs.

He added that the government of the New Patriotic Party[NPP] believes in its wisdom that the election of MMDCs will make them accountable to the people directly and also engender development at the local level and therefore entreat all to consider a YES vote on December 17,2019,so that this laudable idea of government will yield positive results for the betterment of the Nation, adding he knows we can do it as we did for the creation of the Savanna Region which was done devoid of any political partisanship, he added
