Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Honours Hardworking Teachers

The Central Regional Director of Education, Ms Rosemond N. Blay, has said that technical and vocational subjects are to be incorporated in the core subjects to give students a broader view of the academic work that can place them an advantage in the job market.

Ms Blay said this at the 2006-2009 Best Teacher Award ceremony of the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa district  at Breman Asikuma, during which 64 teachers and non-teaching staff were honoured for their hard work and dedication to duty.

They received items including Fridges, colour television sets, Gas cookers cylinders, Ghetto Blasters, Gas Stoves and regulators, all totalling 12,906.15 Ghana Cedis.

The theme for the occasion was The Motivated Teacher and the New Educational Reform.

The Regional director said the upgrading of Teacher Training Colleges into diplomas awarding institutions is an indication that the New Education
Reform requires teachers with a broader knowledge in the teaching profession.

She said the Education Reforms needed a teacher who was focused, adaptable to change, and who was a model, adding that the teaching profession had mentorship as a quality that people should look up to.

This, she said, requires a teacher who is morally upright and has the respect for the values of society.

The Reforms also need a visionary, committed, and innovative teacher who is also adaptable to change and wants pupils to be creative and innovative.

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the area, Madam Georgina Nkrumah Aboah, expressed concern about the poor performance of schools in the recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

She noted that the district's general performance had declined from 48 per cent in 2007 to 38 per cent in 2008, adding that the district placed 12th out of the 13 schools in the Central Regional last year.

The DCE therefore urged the teachers to put up their best to help improve the standard of education in the district.
