Volta Regional Minister petitioned to halt Director of Education's interference in Model Basic School

Concern Parents of the Volta Regional Model Basic School have petitioned Mr. James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister, to halt what they describe as unnecessary interference by the Municipal Director of Education, Dr. Adzo Yeboah Adzimah in the affairs of the parents’ teacher association (PTA) of the school.

The parents said the actions of the Director had led to disruptions in the school governance system, financial mismanagement, and a decline in educational standards.

Addressing the media, the parents said they have exhausted all the necessary channels of communication without success, compelling them to bring the issue to the public domain through the media.

They alleged that the actions of Dr Adzimah led to unjustified transfer of qualified teachers from the school, and this had resulted in a drastic decline in the performance of the children.

“Madam Adzo Yeboah Adzimah, the Municipal Director, has emphatically stated that certain teachers were transferred simply for sharing information with parents regarding prolonged PTA leadership and school administration issues.”

The parents also alleged that Dr Adzimah, having sidelined them from key decision- making, has unilaterally imposed an exorbitant examination fee of thirty (30) Ghana cedis per student per term without consultation.

They alleged that at a PTA meeting held on Wednesday December 11, 2024, Dr Adzimah, explicitly threatened those children of parents, who raised concerns about unacceptable conducts of the PTA and School Management would be dismissed.

The parents said the Municipal Education Office, together with the old PTA executives, introduced a fee-paying computer programme (Bridge IT), requiring each child to pay four Ghana cedis per session for ICT education.

“Parents opposed this programme as it deprives financially disadvantaged children access to a fundamental educational resource.”

Despite parental objections, those who had already paid were not refunded. Till date, because parents object to the introduction of a private business into the school, the ICT classes are now in a very bad state, the entire school population of over 1,200 pupils currently has only four desktop computers.”

The parents said computer classes in the school have stalled and their wards were no longer having meaningful IT classes just because of the botched private computer programme they objected to.

They appealed to the Minister to act and retrieve the illegal fees charged to their wards in the name of IT classes.

The parents also called on the Minister to ensure a full investigation be conducted into the mismanagement of PTA funds and financial dealings under the current administration.

Mr. Yahuza Dimmie, the Assistant Chief Director of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council who received the petition on behalf of the Regional Minister assured the parents that necessary actions would be taken to address the concerns.

Meanwhile, Dr. Adzimah, the allegations describing them as false and baseless, adding that she was ever ready to respond should higher authorities invited her.
