The tariff hike, applied to all customer categories, including residential, non-residential, and special load tariff (SLT) customers.

According to the PURC, the upward review was necessary to sustain utility service providers and ensure a reliable electricity supply to all customers.

The Commission, in a statement, said it considered various macroeconomic and operational factors, including inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising fuel cost, in making its decision.

However, residents in Takoradi have expressed worried about the impact the tariff hike would have on their lives, noting that the increase would lead to higher electricity bills, which would be difficult to pay given the existing economic challenges.

Traders in the area who spoke with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) were also concerned about the potential impact of the tariff hike on their businesses.

Some said they might pass the increment to consumers to maintain their capital, which could lead to higher prices of goods and services.

Mr. John Afful, a carpenter, said the government should consider the economic implications of the tariff hike on ordinary Ghanaians, and its potential impact on their lives.

Meanwhile, the PURC has stated that it has carefully analysed the existing parameters and considered the competitiveness of industries and the general living conditions of Ghanaians before approving the tariff hike.
