The reforestation initiative launched by President John Dramani Mahama on March 21 at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya municipality of the Ashanti region aims at planting about 30,000,000 trees countrywide this year.

It also seeks to sensitize the population on the benefits of trees, the impact of trees on climate change, forest regulations as well as entice the youth to get into tree planting either as a civic duty or a venture into lucrative agro enterprise.

According to Mr. Emmanuel Omane the manager of the Atebubu forest district, the initiative will mobilize farmers, youth groups, schools and traditional leaders to plant and nurture about 775,530 trees across the region in June.

He said the program will also support agro forestry systems that combine crops and trees for both environmental and economic benefits, engage local communities on sustainable land management practices, monitor as well as evaluate reforestation efforts using modern technology and traditional knowledge systems.

The launch will be performed by the Bono East regional minister Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi with the regional manager of the Forest Services Division of the Forestry Commission Mrs. Lucy Amu Ntim delivering a keynote address.

The occasion is expected to be graced by representatives of civil society groups, development partners and traditional authorities from across the region.
