The relocation of the trucks according to the AMA forms part of measures to ease traffic congestion on the 2.5km road as well as improve the sanitation situation at Agbogbloshie.

Speaking to the media after an inspection of the new site by members of the Security Council of the AMA and the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly, (AbcMA), the Mayor of Accra, Elizabeth Kwatsoe Taiwah Sackey commended the drivers of the trucks for complying with the relocation plan without any resistance.

She warned that drivers who go contrary to the directives and park along the road would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

She pointed out that as part of the decongestion exercise all motorcycles and tricycle operators who work on the Agbogbloshie road would also be relocated to a designated area to enable them to ply their business safely.

Touching on the sanitation situation in the area and measures to address it, Mayor Sackey advised traders to desist from selling on the peripherals of the roads and dumping waste into the drains.

She disclosed that the AMA would soon embark on an exercise to evict and punish traders who sell on the peripherals of the roads at the Agbogbloshie market adding that traders who fail to occupy them and decide to sell at unauthorized places will be dealt with severely.

"Those who sell on the streets…it’s against the law. Per the bye-law, you are not supposed to sell on the streets. We are evicting them very soon and forewarning those who buy from them. They should be mindful of what they are doing, because the more you buy from those selling on the streets, the more you encourage them. When we come, we will arrest those selling and those buying and charge them both with a fine,” Madam Elizabeth Sackey cautioned.

In another development, the Mayor and members of the Security Council of the AMA and AbcMA after a meeting with stakeholders had agreed to mount and mark NO PARKING signage on sections of the Agbogbloshie road, intensify clamping and towing operations, collaborate with the Police to introduce police visibility points, commence joint dredging exercise as well as deploy Public Health Officers to enforce sanitation bye-laws among others.

The stakeholders’ engagement was organized under the auspices of the Greater Accra Minister Henry Quartey.
