Sekyere Central District marks 34th National Farmers’ day in a grand style

The gallant farmers couple with other inhabitants of Sekyere Central District trooped in their numbers to mark the 34th farmers day at Bonkron a community in the aforementioned district.

The colorful event was also graced by the representative of the paramount chief of Nsuta Traditional Council Nana Owusu Sekyere the Atimpemhene, Kwame Asafo Agyei, the MP for Nsuta Kwaman Beposo constituency, DSP Charles Atuah the police commander for the area, Mr Ebenezer Sekyere Afoakwa-Presiding member, Mr Eric Aboagye the District Coordinating Director and other dignitaries.

At the event Mr. Kwame Asafo Agyei, who also second as the Chairman for the Parliamentary Select Committee on Agriculture unveiled that, annually the country spends Two Billion Dollars on importation of food items and other related commodities which doesn't complement to the growth of our economy.



He continued that, among the items which are imported into the nation, rice takes the largest portion and it is high time the government adopted a pragmatic measures on how rice could be cultivated on a larger scale for domestic and exportation purposes.



The legislature opined that, when rice cultivation is done on a larger scale, it would create several avenue of employment for Ghanaians.

According to him, the government is teaming up with JICA a Japanese company to see how best rice production could go extra mile in Ghana and fortunately some communities in the Sekyere Central District which falls under his constituency had been selected and he would support such a course with GHC15,000.00 of his common fund next year.



He finally called on farmers at the area to rally behind the project when it begins to offer a phase lift to rice production in the district.

At the tail end of the event Mr. Yaw Manu Johnson was adjudged the overall best farmer in the Sekyere Central District.



In his speech, he called on the government to make ready market for their farm produced it would be prudent if an edifice is established for the astute farmers in the district to meet and discuss pertinent issues on agriculture from time to time.
