Traditional Leaders Sound Alarm on Drug Menace

Nana Dwomo Ameyaw IV, Chief of Amoma, who chaired the event, urged the community to take a united stand against drug abuse rather than leaving the fight to security agencies alone.

"Parents, teachers, religious leaders, and community leaders should all be responsible for our children's future," Nana Ameyaw emphasized. "No one should say 'my child does not use drugs, so it is not my concern.'"

The chief highlighted how drug experimentation often begins with curiosity or peer pressure, gradually leading to mental health challenges, broken homes, and increased crime. He called on the youth to resist deceptive messages that drugs make one stronger or more successful.

"Value your lives," he urged the pupils present. "Do not allow anyone to deceive you into believing that drugs make you stronger, wiser, or more acceptable in life."

Nana Ameyaw pledged his traditional council's commitment to collaborating with government agencies, schools, and stakeholders to keep Amoma safe and free from the menace of drug abuse.

NACOC Reports Progress Amid Emerging Challenges

Madam Portia Abuie, Bono East Regional Commander of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), noted that while the region has made significant progress in prevention, treatment, and law enforcement, the global drug problem continues to evolve.

"Trafficking networks are becoming more sophisticated, taking advantage of technology and transnational criminal networks," she stated. "In Ghana's situation, this remains a matter of concern."

The commander reported that NACOC has conducted sensitization programmes in schools, faith-based institutions, and community engagements, as well as providing treatment, rehabilitation, and counselling to individuals suffering from substance use disorders.

However, she identified the high cost of treatment and rehabilitation as a major challenge, sending a strong warning to those involved in trafficking, sale, and distribution of illicit drugs.

"Let me make it clear – NACOC will remain vigilant and resolute in enforcing the laws of Ghana," she declared.

Government Calls for Comprehensive Approach

Mr. Wilfreed Zuuri, District Chief Executive for Kintampo South, read a speech on behalf of the Bono East Regional Minister, Mr. Francis Owusu Antwi, emphasizing that the fight against illicit drugs cannot be won through enforcement alone.

"The government of Ghana recognizes that it requires a comprehensive approach combining preventive education, treatment, rehabilitation, law enforcement, community engagement, and international cooperation," he stated.

The DCE stressed that drug abuse extends beyond individual users, affecting families, undermining public safety, contributing to crime, impacting mental health, and hindering national development.

Recommendations for Action

Madam Abuie offered several recommendations:
• Parents and guardians: Monitor and guide children to prevent drug experimentation
• Educational institutions: Strengthen drug prevention education and counselling programmes
• Religious and traditional leaders: Continue promoting healthy lifestyles and discouraging drug abuse
• Community members: Promptly report suspected drug-related activities to NACOC and security agencies

Engaging Youth Through Education

The programme featured performances including poetry recitals, drama, and educational presentations by school pupils. Awards were presented to the best-performing schools.

Brief remarks were also delivered by the Director of Kintampo South Education Service, the Head of Amoma Clinic, and the President of the Over-the-Counter Medicine Practitioners.
