The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Issah Zakaria, the Municipal Education Director and the heads of the Municipal Security agencies jointly took the salute during the march past, where the pupils exhibited their marching skills.

Nine schools including a kindergarten received wall clocks for their schools for distinguishing themselves during the march pass.

In an address the MCE said the 6th of March was a day of national pride considering the sacrifices made before the country attained independence.

He said the occasion reminded Ghanaians about their responsibilities towards the realization of their national aspirations and taught them to commit themselves to freedom and justices as well as probity and accountability.

He indicated that the theme: Building a prosperous Ghana through patriotism and national unity reminded Ghanaians that they had a responsibility to ensure that they faithfully and honestly discharged their individual and collective responsibilities to the state.

He said if the country was to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015, which included poverty reduction, improvement in child/maternal cares, then there was the need for collaboration and team work.

Touching on teacher absenteeism Mr Zakaria stressed that the Ministry of Education had declared a 'zero tolerance' for teacher absenteeism and that the Yendi Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the District Directorate of Education will strengthen the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) to carry out its mandate to improve the fallen standards of education in the area.

He said sanctions would be taken against teachers who will not adhere to this change and advised the pupils and students to desist from truancy, drug abuse, alcoholism and other anti-social lifestyles.

The MCE announced that to improve on the sanitation in the Municipality the Assembly had instituted a clean-up day, which would take place every first Saturday of each month to be followed by an inspection on the following Monday by the Environmental Health Personnel in the Municipality, after which defaulters would be fined.
