She said pregnant women accessing maternity services were not encouraging as some of them preferred delivery at home and also by Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs).

Ms. Aryee saod delays in seeking health care that sometimes compounded health conditions of some patients, prompting referrals to the Sunyani Regional Hospital was also a challenge to the District Health Directorate.

Ms. Aryee was speaking to the Sunyani West District Team of the Ghana News Agency (GNA)-Star Ghana Media Auditing and Tracking Project on Wednesday at Odomase.

The Project, being sponsored by Star-Ghana, is to raise grassroot awareness and involvement in local governance and uphold the civic rights and responsibilities of citizens.

It is also to widen the scope of social participation and media auditing at the district level through participatory democracy and local participation in
governance in an attempt to tighten the link between policy formulators and implementers.

Star-Ghana is a multi-donor pooled Funding Organisation consisting of Department of Foreign and International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom, Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), European Union (EU) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Ms. Aryee said they should have had 38 functional Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) Compound zones but have only 15.

Ms. Aryee said the District had not attained the 100 percent coverage but added that the Health Directorate was organizing its own Internally Generated Fund (IGF) in addition to assistance by some non-governmental organisations to ensure effective health service delivery.
