Sunyani West DCE praises Directorate for improved health systems

The Sunyani West District Health Directorate has received a higher mark for strengthening resilient health systems.

This, Mr Martin Obeng, the District Chief Executive, observed has resulted in the general prevention of outbreak of communicable diseases in the communities.

He highlighted achievements made in the distribution of Girls' Iron Folic Acid Tablet Supplementation (GIFTS), HINI sensitization and prevention campaign, and smooth operationalisation of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in the district and described it as unprecedented.

Speaking at the 2017 Annual Review Meeting of the Directorate at Odumase in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Mr. Obeng said the 83.1 percent achievement chalked by the Directorate in the annual mass drug distribution to control of Filariasis was also highly commendable.

To this end, the DCE assured that the District Assembly would continue to put in place measures and intervention to ensure that the health concerns of the people were addressed to guarantee disease-free communities.

Mr. Obeng said the Assembly was determined to achieve 100 percent operationalisation of all the 36 CHPS zones in the district hinting that it intended to apply part of its Internally Generated Funds to complete the Ayakomaso CHPS compound and ensure operationalisation of the Akwasua CHPS compound.

Mr. Obeng called on stakeholders in the health sector delivery, particularly churches, NGOs, philanthropists, and donor agencies to compliment the efforts of the District Assembly and other government agencies to improve health system delivery in the district.

In a speech read for him, Dr. Timothy Letsa, the Brong-Ahafo Regional Director of Health, said priorities especially for 2018 had been set out to improve access to equitable and quality health services to achieve universal health coverage.

He said CHPS remained a flagship strategy of the service to improve access, and that would be implemented within the framework of improved referral systems, governance, and accountability at all levels.

Dr. Letsa urged all managers and staff of the Ghana Health Service to be guided by the core values of the GHS in 2018, which were professionalism, teamwork, integrity, discipline, excellence, and people-centered.

Mrs. Eva Aryee, the Sunyani West District Director of Health, mentioned frequent breakdown of refrigerators for storage of vaccines, delays in payment of NHIS claims, and lack of vehicles and motorbikes as some of the daunting challenges faced by the Directorate, which needed urgent attention.
