GES holds 2022 reading festival at Dzolokpuita

The Ho West District Education Directorate has held the 2022 Reading Festival on Friday 1st July, 2022 at the Dzolokpuita E.P. Primary School.

The festival is aimed at encouraging reading among school children, targeted at Basic 1 to Basic 3 pupils across selected schools in the district. The intervention is brought about through a joint effort of the Ministry of Education and Ghana Education Service in collaboration with USAID Learning.

Mr. Francis Yaw Agbemadi, the Ho West District Director of Education in his welcome address indicated that the purpose of the reading festival is to inspire young children to acquire the skills and culture of reading, so that they can contribute their quota not only to themselves but to the nation.

He enlightened the pupils about the importance of reading, adding that "It helps exercise the brain, improve your vocabulary, connect with people and enables you to explore the entire world."


He urged all to continue to inspire the children to read better and also encourage parents to support their children to learn to read.

The District Chief Executive for Ho West, Ernest Victor Apau congratulated the contestants for emerging as winners in their circuits. He entreated parents to continue to support their children in the quest to acquire knowledge.

The DCE disclosed that the growing indiscipline among school children as well as in some communities towards teachers is a cause to worry. For this reason, Queen Mothers as part of their roles will visit Basic Schools and Senior High Schools in the district to interact with them. He also took the opportunity to appreciate teachers for their effort in ensuring the improvement of education in the district.

The participating schools for the competition were Borkorvikofe DA Basic School, Horluta Aflakpe E.P Basic School, Vane E.P. Basic School, Akome Gbogame E.P. Basic School, Anyirawase E.P. Basic School, Anfeota Gbogame E.P. Basic School, Avenui E.P. Basic School, Abutia Teti St. Francis Basic School, Kpoeta Ashanti R.C. Basic School, and Dzolo Gbogame St. Anthony R.C. Basic School.


The Contestants were tested on Decodable Text, Word Formation, Spelling Bee and Reading & Comprehension.

At the end of the competition, Akome Gbogame E.P. Basic School was adjudged winners of the competition with 86.7 points, followed by Dzolo Gbogame St Anthony R.C with 81.7 points and Vane E.P Basic School with 77.3 points respectively. They were given reading books and stationeries. The winners will represent the district in the Regional Reading Competition.
