Mampong Municipal Health Directorate calls for support in HIV/AIDS Campaign

Miss Rebecca Dokurugu, Mampong Municipal Health Director, has appealed to traditional rulers, churches, educational institutions and transport organizations to collaborate effectively with the Directorate to intensify anti-HIV/AIDS campaigns in the Municipality.

Speaking at the mid-year review meeting of the Directorate at Asante-Mampong on Wednesday, She said the prevalence of the pandemic in the municipality currently, stood at 3.6 percent and that there was the need for serious efforts to improve upon the situation for the benefit of the citizenry.

Citing an instance, Miss Dokurugu said, 18 out of every 500 pregnant women who went through HIV/AIDS test in 2007 tested positive as compared to 20 out of 500 in 2006.

She said even though statistics for 2008 was not available the Directorate did not expect anything better based on the records for the previous years.

The Municipal Health Director said still births increased from 44 in 2007 to 78 in 2008 and that child mortality rate rose from two in 2007, to four in 2008.

Miss Dokurugu identified inadequate staff, accommodation, and the lack of transportation, inadequate health personnel and the non-availability of a hospital ambulance at the Mampong Government Hospital as some of the challenges impeding quality health care delivery in the municipality.
