MCE engages Oda Nkwanta rice farmers

In the wake of a widely circulated video in which rice farmers in Oda Nkwanta made a heartfelt appeal to former President John Dramani Mahama for help in finding ready markets for their produce, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central, Solomon Brako Kusi, has taken swift action by visiting the community to engage directly with the farmers.

Before meeting with the farmers, Mr Brako Kusi paid a courtesy call on the Nkwantahene, Nana Dwamena Akenteng, at his palace. The visit to the traditional authority underscored the MCE’s respect for local leadership and his commitment to working collaboratively to address the concerns of the community.

During the engagement with the rice farmers, the MCE listened to their grievances firsthand. The farmers expressed deep frustration over the lack of reliable buyers for their locally grown rice, a situation that poses a serious threat to their livelihoods and the future of rice production in the area. They noted that despite bumper harvests, many of them are struggling to sell their produce, leading to financial losses and discouragement.

In response, Mr. Brako Kusi assured the farmers that their concerns have been taken seriously. He emphasized government’s unwavering commitment to supporting local agriculture and pledged to escalate the matter to the relevant state agencies, including the National Food Buffer Stock Company and the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade.

“I want to assure you that your voices have been heard. As your MCE, I will ensure that your concerns are brought to the attention of the appropriate authorities so that swift and sustainable solutions can be implemented,” he said.

He further reiterated that the government sees agriculture particularly rice production as a vital pillar of economic growth and job creation. Supporting local farmers is central to this vision, and steps will be taken to ensure that their hard work is rewarded through better market access and fair prices.

Mr Solomon Brako Kusi concluded the engagement by reaffirming his dedication to standing with the farmers and working diligently to ensure that their produce receives the market support it deserves.
