Sissala West District teachers to protest

The 2006 batch of new teachers serving in the Sissala West District are threatening to hit the streets if they do not have their first promotion to Superintendent One effected by the end of March.

Also, the first batch of the Untrained Teachers in Diploma in Basic Education (UTTDBE) from the district complained that 18 months after completion of their courses their salaries had not been adjusted to merit their qualification.

The teachers told the GNA that they had waited patiently for far too long and needed to take action against the District Directorate of Education to register their dissatisfaction about the situation.

"We are supposed to apply for the second promotion by next year and we have not yet had the first promotion since we completed college in 2006", they said.

"We have contacted our colleagues from the other districts and they told us that they have had their promotion effected last year."

The UTTDBE teachers said their colleagues from the Lambussie-Karni District have had their salaries adjusted while those of them in the Sissala West District are still waiting.

They also accused the Education Directorate of not giving out transfer letters to teachers who have been transferred to schools within the district.

The teachers said the situation was not encouraging enough for them to give off their best hence the recent poor performance recorded by the district in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

They said the situation also prevented trained teachers from accepting posting to the district.

Mr. Valentine Domapiele, the District Director of Education, said he was new in the district and had however started putting things in place for them to move out and do the inspection to have the qualified ones promoted as soon as possible.

On the adjustment of the salaries of the UTTDBE teachers, Mr. Domapiele said it was a countrywide problem and not their district alone.

He said since he took over as the District Director he had sent the Accountant to Accra five times to make the inputting after which he made a follow up to the office of the Controller and Accountant General.

Mr. Domapiele said it was there that he was told that they were working on the migration of teachers who are already on government payroll into the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) before they would consider fresh inputs.

He said he had invited the teachers on a number of occasions to communicate this information to them but many of them failed to turn up.

He appealed to the teachers to exercise patience as they worked hard to resolve the problems.
