The meeting held at the instance of the Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE), Hon. Kofi Agyei, on March 2, this year was attended by both the Station Directors and Programmes Managers of the five (5) key Radio Stations within the municipality namely, Chris FM [88.9 MHz]; Shalom Radio [100.3 MHz]; Ahenfo Radio [98.1 MHz]; Agro FM [93.1 MHz] and Akomapa FM [89.3 MHz].
Briefing the Committee, the MCE who doubles as the Chairman for the MuSec, explained that the special meeting was organized to interact with the local electronic media to brainstorm issues pertaining to their operations and to forge cooperation aimed at uplifting the image of Berekum.
Urging the media to avail themselves of the diverse golden opportunities abound to project the municipality positively, Hon. Agyei asked radio presenters to liaise with the security agencies in the area to nip certain nefarious activities retarding progress in the bud.
On his part, the Berekum Divisional Police Commander, ACP Sarfo Peprah, who oversees the activities of Berekum, Dormaa, Seikwa, both Jaman North and South Districts, cautioned the media fraternity to desist from making scary and unsubstantiated remarks with a view to tarnishing the reputation of the muicipality, thereby scaring investors at the rear.
He maintained unequivocally that the security personnel were not bent on subjecting the media to censorship, hence to portray the beauty of democracy, the media, tagged as the 4th Realm of Estate, needed to be circumspect in their reportage, whilst controlling their target audience to refrain from making irritating, disgusting, defamatory and speculative comments that might jeorpadize the relative peace being enjoyed in the area.
On behalf of representatives of the Radio Stations present at the meeting, Jarvis Sidique Muhammad, Manager of Programmes for Shalom Radio, attributed part of the blame largely to the proliferation of 'Social Media' in that he called for a collaborative effort between the MuSec and the Media to curb the phenomenon.
He commended the effort of the Berekum Municipal Security Council for championing the crusade towards maintenance of peaceful coexistence in the area through the invitation of the leadership of the local electronic media for the extraordinary brainstorming session.
