The meeting brought together representatives of the District Assembly GES and schools in which the research was carried out.
In her opening remarks, the Director of the organisation: Hajia Lamnatu Adam revealed that her organization has been operating in the District since 2006. The organization initially concentrated on sponsorship packages in education but subsequently expanded to include Foods Rights, climate change issues where the capacities of women are built to appreciate the effects and preventive mechanisms to help sustain the environment. It also included women rights projections among others.
The brain behind the research according to the director was to among others: assess enrollment status in schools, participation of local communities in schools governance, infrastructural capacity of schools and stakeholder participation in school governance.
According to her, the research was built around four thematic areas including: Human Resource content, Financial Resource, Infrastructural Resource and Time Resource. Eleven (11) primary schools were selected for the exercise.
The presentation revealed countless lapses in schools some of which included: woefully inadequate furniture and text books in all the selected school, zero school libraries and computer labs, appreciable pupil teacher ratio especially in terms of trained teacher - pupil ratio, capitation grants and PTAs' as the main source of funds in schools. It also pointed out that time management in schools was on the high side as well as high levels of enrollment figures in schools.
Reacting to the state of text books shortage in schools, the rep. of the District Director of Education noted that text books have not been supplied to schools across the country since 2014 and which according to him is responsible for the shortage.
According to SONGTABA, the research findings will be made available to the Assembly and GES to help shape policies to respond to the issues raised to improve education in the area. Attached are some pictures of the meeting.
