The operation was done jointly by Dr Peter Baffue, a Ghanaian gynaecologist and his Cuban counterpart, Dr Barbara Ferrcipe, at the hospital.
Dr Baffue told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the woman had been in labour for three days before reporting to the hospital.
He said it was very rare to have a successful full term pregnancy outside the womb, adding it usually aborts either involuntarily or by surgery when it endangers the life of the mother.
It was also not common to perform abdominal pregnancy surgical operation without the mother or the child dying, he said, adding that the Bolgatanga Hospital could probably be the first in Ghana to have achieved such feat.
Dr Baffue, who is also the Regional Chief Gynaecologist, was briefing the GNA at this year\'s Annual Regional Scientific Week of Cuban Medical Staff held in Bolgatanga.
He said there was a high incidence of uterine rupture associated with women in the region, especially in the overseas area, and expressed worry that if not checked, the situation could lead to deadly complications.
The forum is used to review activities undertaken by Cuban Medical Staff working in the Region, including their achievements and challenges.
Some 17 Cuban medical specialists are working in the Upper East region including eight at the Regional hospital.
Others are lecturing at the Navrongo Campus of the University of Development Studies where they have been acclaimed for reforming and raising standards.
In his opening remarks, the Regional Director of Health, Dr Korku Awoonor- Williams thanked the Cuban Medical staff for their immense support to health delivery in the area.
He noted that had it not been for the Cubans, it would have been very difficult to undertake health delivery effectively in the area, explaining that many Ghanaian doctors posted to the Region failed to report at their posts.
He appealed to the head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Ghana to send more specialists to the Region to augment the staff there.
The Head of the Cuban Medical Brigade in Ghana, Mr Felip Bustillo, bemoaned the lack of adequate health personnel especially doctors in the three northern regions.
