Kintampo Health Directorate holds annual year review

The Kintampo Director of the Ghana Health Services on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at the Kintampo Health Research Centre Conference Hall conducted its annual performance review under the leadership of Alice Vorletto, the Municipal Health Director.

As customary, the Health Service here in Kintampo, the performance review was conducted in a meeting with various stakeholders and individuals in the health care delivery value chain with notable representation from the Municipal Health Committee.

In her welcome address she gave a general overview of the status of health care in the Kintampo Municipality noting that, staff strength remains at 377 which is woefully inadequate while indicating that, out of the 35 Nation Builders Corp (NABCO) trainees assigned to the Municipality under the Heal Ghana module, only 10 remain at post. She also bemoaned the doctor-patient ratio which stands at 1:58,557 in the five Health Centers, sixteen (16) Health Compounds and thirty (30) CHPs without compounds. Shortage in Key members of staff such as Midwives, Physician Assistants, and Disease Control Officers, etc. according to her are worrying signs.

The Municipal Director of Health Service then surged on to disclose that, hypertension and diabetes were on the rise in the Municipality, as malaria remains at the top of the out-patient department (OPD) case. Two (2) maternal deaths were recorded in the year under review, 2019. She continues her address by indicating that, her outfit continues to grapple with challenges such as logistics, capacity building, delay in reimbursement of health Insurance funds, office space and appreciating the efforts of all stakeholders in the successes achieved in spite of the challenges.

Interestingly and commendable in this year’s review was the holistic assessment carried out by another Health Services Directorate. In this case, it was done by the Kintampo South Health Directorate led by Dr. Fosuhene Kusi. The report on this holistic assessment carried out on four broad spheres of Universal Health Coverage, Reduction in mobility and mortality, efficient governance and prevention of communicable diseases.

Deduction from the assessment pointed to the fact that more nurses and staff were needed prevalence of anemia in pregnant women, efficient governance was being achieved, tuberculosis case notification was below the national target and the incidence of malaria was quite high.

Some general performances were disclosed by Joseph Nanga who did a presentation on behalf on the Health Information Unit.

The Kintampo Hospital also disclosed that, they were currently using the services of two doctors in the facility where they should be using 8-10 doctors. They also reported a 16% increase in OPD attendance with a 14% increase in clients insured. 136 deaths were recorded in 2019 with 134 certified and pneumonia being the top cause of mortality with 16 deaths. The bemoaned the situation of no funds from the government in the year.

The National Health Insurance Authority also disclosed that Kintampo leads the way in the defunct Brong Ahafo Region with an active membership of 79,189 and the worrying situation of co-payment, the lack of vehicle and no credentialed pharmacy shop in the Municipality.

Presentations were made on the Corona Virus also referred to as the COVIO19 which is ravaging Asia and parts of Europe as well as Polio which has two (2) positive cases in Portor of the Kintampo Municipality.

The Kintampo Health Research Centre was also on hand to speak on the implementation of the malaria vaccines currently on-going in six (6) regions as well as a study on hypertension detection, counseling, and management.

Finally, some members of staff of the Ghana Health Service, Volunteers, and individuals who have tremendously assisted in Health Care Delivery in the Municipality were recognized with certificates and citations with the highest recognition going to Dr. David Mensah and his wife Brenda.
