Mr George Mensah Akpalo, Municipal Chief Executive, said this at the formal opening of the Fourth Quadrennial Delegates Conference of the West Akyem Municipal branch of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) at Asamankese.
The conference was held on the theme: œEducation in Crisis - The Way Forward.
Mr Akpalo said though there were more qualified teachers in the area results of the Basic Educational Certificate Examination (BECE) kept falling.
He cited 2011 as an example where the municipality scored 47 percent at the BECE, but the results dropped to 42 percent in 2012 and called on teachers to give off their best.
Mr Akpalo thanked teachers for responding to the appeals from government to suspend their strike action while government met their leadership to resolve their grievances.
Mr Khalid Zaballah, Municipal Deputy Director of Education, said some teachers who were found to be aiding their pupils during the recent municipal mock examination had been made to sign a bond of good behaviour.
He assured the teachers that the mock examination was not to access their performance but to find out the challenges facing the pupils for the necessary solutions to be adopted.
He called on teachers to research into the reasons for the poor performance of pupils at the BECE and help find solutions to any
challenge that they would come out with.
Mr Samuel Asante Anaafi, Acting Municipal Chairman of GNAT, called for support for the Youth Desk of GNAT to help harness the potential of young people who had joined the teaching service to encourage them to stay on the job.
