Adentan PWDs hail 'Promush Project'

Mr Philip Derick Asare, the Public Relations Officer for the Adentan District Association of Persons with Disabilities has hailed a mushroom promotion project funded by the European Union under the auspices of the Adentan Municipal Assembly.

He said the project would go a long way to liberate disabled persons from "abject poverty" and prevent them from begging for alms on streets.

Mr Asare was referring to the official launch of the European Union "Promoting Mushroom Industry in Adentan Municipality Project" (Promush Project) held on Wednesday in Accra.

The project seeks among other things to create over 5000 jobs for the people in the municipality, including persons with disabilities.

He observed that the main challenge militating against persons with disabilities was unemployment, which he explained compelled them to be engaged in what he described as 'rather embarrassing' income earning activities such as begging for alms.

He said the project was prudent, and pledged his commitment towards advocating full participation of persons with disabilities in the district.

"The project has come on time and we are confident of its implementation", he said.

The 820,000 Euro project received a 660,000 Euro funding from the Europeam Union, while the implementing partners, including the Centre for Local Government Advocacy (CLGA) and the Local Government Network (LOGNet) provided counterpart funding to cover the remaining 160,000 Euros.

Mrs Gladys G.N Tetteh, the Deputy Executive Director for the CLGA said, the partnership with the Municipal Assembly for the project was part of its efforts to stay committed to empowering civil societies for the betterment of people.

She lauded the European Union and other stakeholders for championing the project adding the CLGA was keen on developing the youth, and thus sought to provide prudent advice to government on policy initiation and implementation that would harness the potentials of the youth.

"CLGA would continue to provide necessary recommendations and hold government accountable to ensure the execution of the project," she said.

Mr Saaka Sayuti, the National Coordinator for the LOGNet considered it a privilege for the organisation to partner the others to contribute to national development.

He said the LOGNet would continue to push for the execution of decentralisation policies to ensure that every citizen enjoyed part of the national cake.

He said the organisation would work tirelessly to ensure that the project was executed so as to contribute to the realisation of the objectives for which it was initiated.

"The LOGNet places much emphasis on promoting local government visions and policies", he noted, adding that it would disseminate best practices from the project to its wide membership.
