Demonstrate selflessness, commitment and dedication to work - Minister

The Northern Regional Minister, Mr. Shani Alhassan Shaibu at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council meeting has urged heads of development in the Northern Region to demonstrate selflessness, commitment, and dedication to work.

This year’s edition of the council meeting, which happens periodically to review the progress of the various activities, projects, and programs implemented in the region deliberated on issues of peace and security, education, health, roads, etc.

On issues of peace and security, the Minister applauded the Police Service for their visibility in town and traffic intersections which has been quite effective, adding that the cooperation and support of the Traditional Rulers and Religious Leaders have been key and contributed immensely towards the maintenance of law and order.

However, he cautioned persons who engage in negative activities such as wrongful parking, petty trading, and others around the Tamale Interchange to desist from those activities, and called on the Metropolitan Assembly to fashion out measures to ensure sanity at all times around the Interchange. “I expect the cooperation and support of the entire citizenry to maintain law and order throughout the region", he admonished.

Speaking on education, Mr. Shaibu urged stakeholders and the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives to take a keen interest to monitor the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) which will commence in October in the various examination centers and encouraged the BECE candidates on the need to take their studies seriously before the commencement of their final examinations to enhance their performance.

The Minister noted that, as part of measures by the government to strengthen the health sector and make health care delivery more accessible to citizens, the Northern Region is benefiting from eight (new district hospitals under Government’s Agenda111 Flagship Programme, which are under construction and some yet to commence and expected to be ready for use by December 2023.

"Beneficiary districts and municipalities under the Agenda 111 projects include; Mion, Wulensi, Kpandai, Saboba, Kumbungu, Nanton, Savelugu, and Sagnarigu" he stated.

Following the commissioning of the Tamale Interchange, he said it has eased traffic within the Central Business District (CBD) as well as given a facelift to several roads within the Tamale Metropolis.

According to him, the Northern Region is benefitting immensely from road construction as His Excellency the President of the Republic later this year again cut sod for the construction of the Tamale-Yendi-Tatale road to ease the transportation challenges faced and boost the economies of the towns.

He urged the Council to make concerted efforts to build stronger collaboration with Traditional Authorities, Opinion Leaders, Security Agencies, Political Parties, and other Stakeholders to ensure the maintenance of law, order, and safety on our roads to protect precious lives and properties most especially, during the night.

He assured the Council and the good people of the region that he will ensure the effective and efficient monitoring and evaluation of all government projects to provide value for money and that projects meet required specifications and are completed within schedule.

He urged all Honorable Members of the Council and technocrats from the various sectors to commit to ensuring the effective and efficient utilization of government resources for the benefit of the people.

The meeting was attended by the Representatives of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), Presiding Members, The Chief Director/RCD, Regional Economic Planning Officer (REPO), Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Coordinating Directors (MMDCDs), Regional Heads of Decentralized Department, Staff of the NRCC, and Members of the Media.
