According to eye witnesses, the boys, who were using metal detectors to scavenge for gold from abandoned mining sites were rounded up by officials from the Forestry Commission.
In their bid to evade arrest from the officers, 4 of them jumped into the River Offin but luck eluded the two who couldn’t swim their way out. This development has brought the community into a solemn state.
Addressing the crowd, ACP Cobinnah implored the youth to exercise restraint as the Police have commenced its investigation. He was of the view that, any cause of action that will breach peace in the community may thwart every effort aimed at getting a sound and a comprehensive report. The Divisional Commander noted that, the Police top hierarchy is very much interested in the issue and they are going to get to the crux of the issue. He called on anyone with helpful information to come to his office or that of the District Commander of Mponua to assist with investigations.
The DCE, Kofi Marfo lauded the youth for their restraint thus far. He urged them to remain calm as the police have commenced investigations. He consoled the families and spoke words of encouragement to soothe their pain.
He further noted that, he is in touch with the top echelons of the Forestry Commission and the Police department to bring perpetrators to book should anyone be found guilty. Mr. Marfo extended deepest condolence from the Member of Parliament, Mr. Isaac Asiamah to the bereaved family. He mentioned that, the lawmaker has taken the cost of the coffin of the deceased.
Opanin Kwadwo Manu, the head of clan of the deceased asked the DCE and his team to expedite action on the issue to restore calm to the aggrieved youth. He further pleaded for an autopsy to unravel and correct any conflicting reportage in the media, and also called for an immediate burial of his kinsmen by close of the week.
Mr. Seth Kofi Adu, the Assemblyman for the area echoed the words of the earlier speakers and promised justice for the families.
