The DCE expressed worry over the situation, describing the reported fatalities as a serious concern that requires urgent attention from the relevant authorities to prevent further loss of lives.
According to reports, five separate crashes occurred within the period, resulting in five deaths and raising questions about the safety of the highway and the quality of construction works along the stretch.
The DCE attributed the accidents partly to what he described as poor construction and called on the Ghana Highway Authority and the contractor responsible for the road project to take immediate steps to address the defects.
He stressed the need for a thorough assessment of the affected sections of the highway to identify potential hazards and implement the necessary corrective measures.
The Nkawkaw–Abirem highway serves as an important route for motorists, traders and other road users travelling between communities in the Eastern Region. Safety concerns along the road therefore have implications for daily transportation and the movement of goods and services.
The DCE’s appeal highlights the importance of ensuring that road construction projects meet the required safety and engineering standards. Proper supervision, timely repairs and regular maintenance are essential to protecting motorists and other road users.
He has called on the relevant authorities and the contractor to treat the matter with urgency and address the reported defects to help prevent further accidents and loss of lives.
