Sunyani East Municipality honours 16 farmers

The Sunyani East Municipal Assembly has observed the 35th National Farmers Day celebration with the recognition of 16 farmers for their immense contributions towards the growth of the agricultural sector.

They included five females and a military officer and prizes were awarded to them in order of their output and best farming practices in the various categories.

These include crop, livestock, maize, plantain, cassava, vegetable and rice.

Others awards were best female farmer, best youth in agriculture and most promising poultry farmer.

The prizes included Apsonic Motor King, spraying machines, cutlasses (crocodile machetes), wellington boots, key bar soaps, pieces of wax prints, a table top fridge, washing machine, fertilizers and certificates.

Mr Tweneboah Atta Sarfo, a 59-year old farmer from Daadom in the Municipality, was adjudged the Overall Best Farmer and received an Apsonic Motor King, three spraying machines, five cutlasses, wellington boots, a piece of wax print, and a certificate, whilst Madam Victoria Gyan of Nkrankrom took the Best Female Farmer Award.

Speaking on the theme: Enhancing Small Scale Agriculture towards Agribusiness Development at Nkrankrom, Mr Ofosu Denkyira, the Municipal Director of Agriculture, commended farmers and fishers for their efforts in keeping the economy secured.

That they do by producing for industries, for export to earn foreign exchange, and to feed the population.

In addition, they contribute to the creation of employment opportunities and for wealth creation, especially in rural communities, he said.

Mr Denkyiraa urged farmers to work closely with the directorates of Agriculture and other stakeholders to be abreast of modern farming practices and take advice of agricultural extension agents seriously for maximum returns.

He said they should take advantage of government’s policies and programmes including subsidies, Planting for Food and Jobs, Planting for Export and Rural Development, and Rearing for Food and Jobs to improve their living standards.
