Mayor presents 1,950 school desks to Education Directorate

Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey has presented 1,950 to the Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service in the metropolis to be distributed to basic schools.

According to the AMA boss who presented the pieces of furniture on Friday, November 3, the initiative sought to address not only the practical needs for seating but also symbolized a commitment to education, equality, and community development in Accra.

The desks would be distributed to selected public basic schools in the Okaikoi South, Ablekuma South and Ashiedu Keteke Sub Metropolitan Districts respectively.

Speaking to the media after the presentation the Mayor emphasised the importance of investing in quality education adding that the support formed part of the government's efforts to enhance quality education and promote effective learning.
"Our children are the future and they deserve the best possible environment for learning. By donating these school desks, we hope to make a positive impact on the lives of thousands of pupils in Accra," she said.

She mentioned that the AMA was undertaking numerous interventions to improve the learning environment, enhance academic performance, address overcrowding, support inclusivity, boost students' morale as well and promote equality in the education sector.

Some of these interventions she said include the construction and rehabilitation of school buildings, the donation of learning materials as well as the organisation of quiz competitions among other essential campaigns.

The Mayor used the opportunity to urge teachers to maintain the desks and report any damage to the Assembly for repairs to help keep them in good shape.
The Accra Metro Director of Education, Justine Apaw, who received the donation on behalf of the Education Directorate, expressed gratitude for the Mayor's commitment to improving education in the city.

"These school desks will no doubt alleviate the challenges associated with seating as well as create a more conducive learning environment for our students and contribute to their overall academic success, " she said.

Some teachers, and pupils in an interview welcomed the gesture with open arms, as they anticipate the positive impact of improved infrastructure on the quality of education in Accra. The school desks, constructed from durable and locally sourced materials, were specifically designed to meet the needs of the students in the region.

Present at the brief handing-over ceremony were the Member of Parliament for the Okaikwei South Constituency, Hon, Dakoa Newman and officials from Metro Education Directorate.
