The Minister said the facility would address the persistent challenge of farm produce rotting at farm gates due to inadequate storage, processing and marketing arrangements. The situation has affected farmers who sometimes struggle to transport and preserve their produce after harvesting, resulting in significant losses and reduced income.

According to Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, the centre is expected to serve farmers in both Afram Plains North and Afram Plains South, providing support to agricultural communities across the two districts.

Post-harvest losses remain a major concern for farmers, particularly when harvested crops cannot reach markets in good condition or within the required time. Such losses can undermine farmers’ efforts, increase production costs and discourage investment in agriculture.

The establishment of the centre is therefore expected to contribute to better handling and management of farm produce, helping farmers minimise waste and obtain improved returns from their hard work.

The facility is also expected to support agricultural development in the Afram Plains, where farming plays an important role in the local economy and provides livelihoods for many households.

Hon. Awatey’s remarks underscore the need for investment in agricultural infrastructure to address challenges along the food supply chain and ensure that farmers benefit more from their produce.

The initiative is expected to strengthen agricultural activities in both districts, reduce avoidable food waste and contribute to improved food availability and security in the region.

The Minister’s comments also draw attention to the need for continued collaboration among government agencies, local authorities and farming communities to develop practical solutions to the challenges confronting farmers.
