Presenting the items made up of 5,042 school uniforms, 159,486 exercise books and 1,000 dual desks to various schools, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Imoro Adam Anaba, said the distribution of the materials was in fulfillment of government's promise in the 2008 election to provide educational materials to deprived schools in the country.
He stated that even though the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had been in power for only two years, the Educational Directorate in the District had received a lot of interventions from Government.
Mr Anaba mentioned the construction of a five-number six-unit classroom blocks, Six-number three unit classroom blocks, three-number three unit classroom blocks, one-number nine unit classroom block and one unit teachers' quarters with boreholes.
He indicated that last year the Assembly distributed 500 dual desks, 3,309 free school uniforms and 20,425 exercise books among others to some deprived schools in the area.
The DCE said the construction of the schools at the deprived areas in the district would help to reduce the burden and tiredness associated with school children commuting long distances to attend schools.
Mr Anaba said,"The Government will in the course of this year roll out more schools to be included in the Ghana School Feeding Programme to give a true and holistic meaning to efforts towards improving education in Ghana in general and Bawku West in particular".
The DCE appealed to the District Directorate of Education to intensify its monitoring and supervisory roles to ensure that they delivered quality education.
He called on parents to complement government's role in education by devoting much of their resources to the development of their children's education.
He told the pupils"now that government has provided you with the needed educational materials you have no cause to blame anybody for not performing. You need to strive hard to come out with good grades," he advised.
Receiving the educational materials on behalf of the schools, the District Director of Education, Mr Paul Apanga thanked the District Assembly for the support and said it would help address some of the challenges bedeviling education in the area.
He, however, appealed for more support especially in the area of furniture and said one of the major problems confronting education in the District was inadequate furniture.
He attributed this to the increase in enrolment figures in schools in the area and indicated that the enrolment figures at the basic school level went up from 26,284 in 2009-2010 academic years to 30,000 in the 2010-2011 academic years.
