The poultry project dubbed 'Better Chicken for a Better Future' is aimed at creating a fully functioning inclusive and integrated poultry meat value chain that provides decent jobs and better income for poultry farmers in Ghana and is targeted at 500 small scale poultry farmers (30% women and youth) in the Bekwai Municipality and Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region.

The Better Chicken project is funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency with contributions from the partners Solidaridad, agriDEPOT, Hendrix Genetics, IGrowChicken, Nutreco, MS Schippers and TransNational Agri Projects B.V.

The MCE was excited at the prospects of how the project would help address a key challenge of poultry farmers in his municipality which was access to quality but cost-competitive.

He added that the project is in line with Ghana's government initiative - 'Rearing for food and Jobs' under its flagship agricultural program 'Planting for Food and Jobs'.

Project beneficiaries will, among other interventions, receive training on husbandry practices and agribusiness as well as have access to consistent quality feed, improved breed of day-old chicks, drugs and vaccines and hygiene products at fair prices and a guaranteed buyer for their mature birds.

The project would also facilitate participant’s access to savings and loans, insurance and pensions using Solidaridad's Village Savings and Loans Association Scheme as a vehicle.
