He said most of the debts were accrued through non-payment of counterpart funding of development projects including the European Union funded Community-Based Rural Development Project and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency, which is specifically owed about 20,000 Ghana Cedis.

Mr Condobrey who disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said the Assembly also owned the Unit, Town and Area Councils about 50,000 Ghana Cedis.

He said the Assembly's debtors were many, adding that seven debt-related cases against the Assembly were pending before the courts.

Mr Condobrey noted that accelerated development would be jeopardized until these debts were dealt with.

The MCE expressed the hope to change the negative perception of the  Assembly, improve on sanitation and promote peace among the traditional areas.

It would also establish a quarterly dialogue with its constituents and launch an educational foundation.

The MCE is committed to assisting the youth in skills acquisition and making agriculture more attractive to them.
