Atwima-Mponua communities show the way

Five farming communities in the Atwima-Mponua District, have taken their destiny into their own hands, by showing the way in self-help.

The chiefs and people of Manukrom, Gyereso, Antwiagyeikrom, Donkoto and Sreso-Timpom, from their own resources, are providing education infrastructure, namely, classrooms, information communication technology (ICT) centres, teachers' accommodation and washrooms, to promote access and enhance teaching and learning.

At Manukrom, where a block of six classrooms had been built for the local primary school, the chief, Nana Kwame Poku, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the project was funded through a five per cent levy imposed on each bag of cocoa.

The people additionally contributed labour, and he said they decided to take responsibility for tackling their most pressing needs.

He appealed to the District Assembly to help supply the school with the full complement of furniture.

Conducting reporters of the Agency round to inspect a teachers' bungalow under construction at Gyereso, Mr Richard Kumah Bonsie, assembly member, said its completion would motivate teachers to accept postings to the community.

The project is now at the lintel level, and he said support by way of cement, roofing sheets and nails donation would be most welcomed.

A visit to Antwiagyeikrom, also saw the people busily working to complete an ICT centre, and additional classrooms, to ease congestion at the local basic school.

Mr. John Awuni, assembly member, said these were being implemented through a development levy on the people and communal labour.

The GNA was in these communities under STAR-Ghana's sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative launched to put the spotlight on how government's resources were helping to transform the lives of the people, particularly those in the rural areas.

The goal is to aid transparency, promote accountability and good local governance.

Mr Awuni also took the reporters to Donkoto, another community he represents at the assembly, where a teachers' accommodation block is being constructed, and said, it formed part of a five-year development plan launched to improve their living conditions.

The people in another town, Sreso-Timpom, are not left out, since they are putting up an ICT centre for the local Islamic Junior High School.
