This was made known by the municipal chief executive Hon. Edward Owusu at the first ordinary meeting of the assembly for this year in Atebubu.
“I must mention that ensuring peace in the municipality comes with a huge cost. This assembly spends close to GHC15, 000.00 on security every week.
This notwithstanding, I wish to give the strongest assurance that we will not relent on our effort to ensure that the municipality continues to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere especially when we are approaching the political campaigns and election season. We will continue to support the police and other security services with the logistics they need for their operations” he said.
Mr. Edward Owusu announced that additional 72 police personnel have been posted to the municipality from the Formed Police Unit, 6 of who will replace members of the existing Counter Terrorism Unit operating in the municipality.
On the Fulani herdsmen menace he said “one other area of great concern to all of us is the perennial conflict between the nomadic Fulani herdsmen and the farmers. Oftentimes these conflicts have sought to threaten the peace of the municipality. I must say that this has become a national security issue and all the necessary reports have been submitted to the National Security Secretariat”.
The MCE however assured the house that the municipal security committee MUSEC has had a series of engagements with the traditional authorities on the issue and hoped that measures put in place as a result will reduce the menace to the barest minimum.
Mr. Edward Owusu urged the public to be vigilant and also assist the security agencies with relevant information to enable them beat criminals to their game to ensure lasting peace in the municipality.
