The engagement provided an opportunity for traders to share concerns affecting their businesses, including enforcement activities by the Forestry Commission and inadequate space for timber trading and related operations.

During the interaction, the traders highlighted the difficulties they face in carrying out their daily activities and called for interventions to address the concerns affecting their livelihoods.

One of the major issues raised was the lack of adequate space at the existing market, which has created challenges for traders seeking suitable areas to operate their businesses.

The traders also expressed concerns about Forestry Commission enforcement measures, underscoring the need for continued dialogue between industry players and the relevant authorities to promote compliance with regulations while addressing legitimate business concerns.

In response, the MCE assured the workers and traders that the Assembly would explore the possibility of securing a new site to provide more space and improve conditions for timber-related activities.

The MCE also indicated that the Assembly would explore public-private partnerships as a possible means of mobilising resources and developing the necessary infrastructure to support the industry.

The proposed interventions are expected to provide a basis for addressing the concerns raised by traders while promoting a more organised and sustainable timber market.

The engagement highlights the importance of collaboration between local authorities, industry operators and regulatory agencies in resolving challenges, supporting livelihoods and ensuring that business activities comply with applicable regulations.

The Assembly's proposed efforts to identify a new site and explore partnership opportunities could help create a more suitable working environment for timber traders and contribute to economic activity within the municipality
