BAWKU W: 1,383 receive cash under LEAP, as DCE appeals for expansion

District Chief Executive of the Bawku West District in the Upper East Region, Agbango Simon Ayenda has said the LEAP programme has been of great benefit to beneficiaries in the district as it has positively affected their living standards.

The DCE said a number of them who invested the money into other productive ventures are now reaping great benefits and are living better lives than before.

Mr. Agbango who was addressing the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur when she paid a working visit to the area to monitor the 44th LEAP payment therefore made a passionate appeal to the Minister to consider the district for the LEAP expansion programme to cover more communities and a lot more households.

He noted that because it is a direct cash transfer to the people the effect is quick.

One hundred and fourteen (114) individuals from five communities including Googo – 87, Sakpari – 17, Yakoliga – 6, Komaka – 3 and Ayaka-Fetegah – 1 received various sums of monies that covers the 44th payment plus their two months arears.

Nana Oye Lithur also assured that Emergency LEAP payment of GHc100 for 3 months (September to November, 2016) to the 1,269 individuals whose plights were worsened in the Bawku West District as a result of floods, windstorm and rainstorm would be paid soon with their first two months payment scheduled for October 24 -28, 2016.

She also assured the DCE that his request for expansion would be considered in the next batch of districts for expansion.

The Minister told beneficiaries who are yet to be registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme that the process is ongoing for them to register free of charge and also advised them against paying any money to any individual for services rendered them under the schemes.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection through the LEAP programme commenced the Emergency LEAP Programme in 4 districts in the Upper East Region to cover 3,042 individuals that have been identified and registered for the Emergency LEAP in 59 communities after their properties were destroyed by flood and rainstrorm in September this year.

The affected districts include:
1.    Talensi – 434 individuals
2.    Bongo – 375 individuals
3.    Builsa South – 964 individuals
4.    Bawku West – 1269
