Government is to support the establishment of community radio stations in each district across the country.

Communication Minister Haruna Iddrisu, who announced this, said the measure is in recognition of the crucial role community radio plays in promoting dialogue in local communities.

He was speaking at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Community Radio Network at Ada.

“I am happy to note and to formally announce [that] government will give true meaning to ensure that, at least, every district of Ghana has a community FM station,” Mr Haruna said, attracting loud applause from his audience.

“Government remains committed to that noble goal,” he added, hinting that the Ministry of Communication will work with the Local Government and Rural Development Ministry to ensure that the programme is rolled out.

Mr. Iddrisu said he has asked the National Communication Authority board of directors to ensure the project is implemented “by the first half of 2010.”

He also announced that cabinet has approved the Right to Information Bill and has directed the Attorney General to present it to Parliament.

The Ghana Community Radio Network played a lead role drafting the bill which seeks to define the roles of state, commercial and community radio stations in the country.

Education Minister and Member of Parliament for Ada, Alex Tettey-Enyo, spoke about some of the benefits local communities derive from community radio.

He said such a platform would help immensely to sensitize community the citizenry to government policies.

The Ghana Community Radio Network was formed 10 years ago to promote the establishment of community radio stations in the country. Its membership now stands at 19.
