The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU), on Tuesday jointly marked this year’s World AIDS Day with public education on the disease’s prevention at Ejisu.

They encouraged people especially, school children, to lead pure lives and observe strict abstinence from sex.

Madam Helena Awurusa, GNAT Gender Programme Co-ordinator, said there was the need for more aggressive and united campaign to reduce the infection rate of the disease.

She said the two bodies have trained 40 of their members and 1,000 students in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality to help sustain the awareness creation.

Madam Awurusa spoke against the continued stigmatization of people living with the disease, saying this makes it difficult for them to go public on their HIV-AIDS status.

This, she noted, was not helpful to the cause of bringing down the spread of the disease and said those infected deserved empathy and support to live normal lives.

The National Co-ordinator advised the teachers to intensify the campaign against discrimination and stigmatization.
