Out of the district's teacher population of 1,200, only 400 of them, representing one-third of the total figure, are professionally trained.
Mr Kena, who was contributing to discussions at a public forum organized by the Manso-Nkwanta Traditional Council, said the situation needed to change to help raise the standard of education in the district.

Another challenge they faced, he said also has to do with decent accommodation and said every effort should be made to tackle this, to make the area more attractive to teachers.

He noted that many of the trained teachers were not enthusiastic about accepting posting there because of the acute housing problem.
Mr Kena said notwithstanding the constraints, they have been working hard and with passion, to improve the academic performance of the school children, adding that, the district has been performing well in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

In 2005, the district scored 68 per cent passes in the BECE, going up to 70.1 per cent in 2006 and hit 81.2 per cent in 2007 before dipping down to 64.4 per cent in 2008. In year 2009, it scored 77.7 percentage passes.

The meeting provided the platform to brainstorm on ways to inject some pace into the development of the area and in attendance were Heads of the various Departments.

Mr Charles Oti Prempeh, the District Chief Executive (DCE), said they would soon complete a District Assembly Hall Complex and a kindergarten block, both under construction at Manso-Nkwanta.

Additionally, a number of feeder roads are to be rehabilitated to make it easier for the people to transport their farm produce to marketing centres.

The Member of Parliament (MP), Mrs Grace Addo, said through her share of the MPs Common Fund, she has supported the construction of a Girls' Dormitory for the Essase-Bontefufuo Senior High School (SHS).

Besides, she had supplied medical equipment to health facilities in the area.

Nana Bi Kusi Appiah II, the Omanhene, said there was the need for all the people to work with unity of purpose to accelerate the socio-economic progress of the district.
