The exercise, dubbed Operation special Highway Cleaning, was instituted by the Central Regional Minister, Mr. Kwamena Duncan in the effort to ensure that all district, municipal and metropolitan assemblies were kept clean.

Mrs. Justina Marigold Assan, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the clean-up formed part of the Central Regional Minister's three thematic areas which are sanitation, job creation, and quality education for students in every part of the region.

Mrs. Assan said open defecation is a major concern to the Assembly and efforts are being made to intensify the campaign against the challenge to avoid the outbreak of cholera and other communicable diseases.

She said the Assembly under the auspices of the Environmental Health and Sanitation Department has embarked on an exercise to encourage the construction of household toilets.

Mrs. Assan said it was aimed at easing pressure on the few public toilets in Swedru and other towns and also discourage the practice of open defecation to promote environmental health and sanitation in the various communities of the municipality.

She said the Assembly has provided materials and technical assistance to households in rural and urban areas to help construct toilets in every household.

She called on the people of Agona West to offer maximum support to the Assembly in the effort to promote good sanitation in the municipality.
