The Assemblyman for Haatso Papao Jesse Nii Noi Anum explained that the property in question belongs to the chiefs and people of Haatso which was leased to the yam traders for a period of 10 years with additional 15 years but they stayed there for about 27 years.
So now the owners wanted the property and had to evict them from the site.
The Assembly member who also doubles as the Presiding Member for the Ga East Municipal Assembly, however, stated that because of the economic value of their trade, the Assembly could not sit and watch the traders to get stranded so it intervened and allocated land at the New Kwabenya Market for them.
Meanwhile, since the Assembly could not put up a structure for the traders, they are allowed to individually do so for their own comfort and for the safety of their goods.
The traders have commended the Assembly for the human face given to their plight and given them the space at the market, adding that but for that they would have been stranded and their business would have collapsed.
They said even though they are yet to fully settle as they continue to build their spaces, business has started as people got wind of their relocation and followed them.
They called on their colleagues who refused to move to the new market space to do so to avoid any confrontation with authorities.
