The Centre, which serves as a vital venue for press conferences, workshops, and other journalist- related engagements in the region, remains incomplete, with Phase II of the project—mainly fencing and finishing works—yet to be executed.
During the World Press Freedom Day celebration organized by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Volta/Oti Chapters, Mr. Gunu, who was the Guest of Honour, said the project began during his tenure as a Regional executive of the NDC.
Now serving both as a Regional Minister, and a journalist himself, he expressed his firm commitment to completing the centre before the next Press Freedom Day in 2026.
“You never know, when another journalist may rise to become Regional Minister again. As one of us, I see this project as a legacy I must complete,” he said, pledging GHC10,000 towards the construction.
His pledge was echoed by other key government officials present at the celebration.
Mr. Prosper Francis Dusey, DCE for Ho West, described journalists as crucial partners in development.
“Without the media, our achievements as politicians and local government leaders would remain in the shadows,” he stated.
He emphasised the tourism potential of Ho West and called on the media to help promote its attractions.
Mr. Dusey pledged GHC1,000, adding that the MP for Ho West, Mr. Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has committed to donate bags of cement to support the project.
Mr. Stephen Adom, MCE for Ho Municipality, also made a pledge of GHC5,000, stressing his commitment to serve the people with integrity.
“I did not come into office to enrich myself, but to serve. Supporting this project is part of that duty,” he said.
He urged media practitioners to prioritise accuracy and seek clarification before publishing their reports.
Mr. Bless Kodjo Katamani, DCE for Akatsi North, encouraged journalists to continue working hard to hold leaders accountable and promote development.
He pledged GHC 6,000 and offered to assist any media practitioner interested in agriculture by facilitating access to arable lands in his district.
Captain George Kofi Nfodjo (Rtd.), former MP and Ambassador-designate, who chaired the occasion, expressed hope that the combined pledges would see the project through to completion by December 2025.
“Judging by the generosity shown today, I am confident that we can finish the Press Centre before the year ends. Let us make it a reality,” he said.
The pledges were made in response to an appeal by Mr. Emmanuel Agbaxode, Chairman of GJA Volta/Oti, during his welcome address.
“A key project at the heart of our association’s vision is the completion of this Press Centre. It was initiated by the previous leadership to serve as a hub for media collaboration and professional development,” he said.
“While progress has been made, we need all hands on deck to bring this project to fruition. We appeal to government agencies, corporate entities, development partners, and well-meaning individuals to join us in realizing this vision.”
The Press Centre, once completed, is expected to serve as a permanent home for media operations in the region, offering space for meetings, training sessions, and journalistic work.
