President John Dramani Mahama, who echoed this when delivering his first state of the nation address on the floor of Parliament Thursday, said, Assembly members across the country often face neglect and inadequate compensation even though they play a key role in Ghana’s decentralization system.

“Decentralization has been at the heart of our governance system, yet key players in the process such as Assemblymen and women often face neglect and inadequate compensation.”

“I did promise to pay modest allowances to our Assemblymen and women. I am committed to that promise”, he stated.

Reacting to the President’s message in an interview with Ghanadistricts.com, Upper West Regional Minister, Charles Lwanga Puozuing, described the move as a step in the right direction, adding that the role of Assembly members in Ghana’s local governance structure could not be underestimated.

He noted that the move was a good way of encouraging persons who serve as assembly members in various electoral areas to do their best to ensure development and improve livelihoods.

He added that the allowances will also cushion assembly members especially, when attending Assembly meetings and also enable them participate fully in local governance.

“Assembly men both appointed and elected are persons who volunteer to serve their communities so it is good ways of encouraging them that if you serve your community well you will still earn something and that will encourage them attend these assembly meetings to enable them participate in governance”, the minister opined.

He lauded the idea and urged assembly members to rally behind the government to deliver on this promise.
