The bono east regional minister Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi has performed this year’s regional launch of the ‘Tree for Life’ reforestation initiative in Atebubu.
According to the minister the initiative will not only see degraded lands reforested but will have the additional benefits of enhancing forest conservation, promote sustainable livelihoods, enhance climate resilience and create jobs in forestry management and nursery development.
He said land degradation leads to erratic and inadequate rainfall and severe dry conditions adding that trees serve as a source of food, medicine, clean air and fuel for cooking.
Hon. Owusu Antwi indicated that of the regional target of 775,530 seedlings, 400,000 of them are expected to be planted by individuals and institutions whiles the remainder will go to two forest reserves in the region.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goal on climate and biodiversity as we approach 2030, the Hon. Minister called for a strict enforcement of environmental laws to meet this objective.
He appealed to traditional authorities to provide land for the initiative and asked private sector players to support forestation efforts through corporate social responsibility activities.
Earlier in a welcome address, the bono east regional manager of the Forest Services Division of the Forestry Commission Mrs. Lucy Amu Ntim said the initiative aims to rehabilitate areas heavily degraded by deforestation by transforming them into ecologically functional landscapes, raise awareness about the importance of trees, restore polluted water bodies and watersheds and promote sustainable livelihoods by creating green jobs in agro forestry, eco tourism, fish farming and apiculture.
A number of dignitaries present planted seedlings to commemorate the day.
Present were high ranking officials of the Forestry Commission, district chief executives from Atebubu-Amantin, Sene east, Sene west, Pru east, Pru west as well as traditional leaders from across the region.
The function was chaired by the Adontenhene of the Atebubu traditional area Nana Kwabena Kyere III.
