The Mayor made the appeal during working visits to the Melcom Group of Companies, Royal Motors, Thakar Overseas Limited, and Sigma Gas Company Limited. The engagements focused on strengthening partnerships with the private sector and exploring ways to increase access to decent jobs.

He encouraged the companies to adopt inclusive recruitment policies by deliberately reserving opportunities for qualified PWDs and young people, emphasizing that expanding employment opportunities would improve livelihoods and strengthen the city’s local economy.

According to the Mayor, the visits form part of the Assembly’s broader stakeholder engagement initiative aimed at addressing development challenges through collaboration with the private sector while promoting job creation and inclusive employment practices across industries.

At Melcom, Managing Director Ramesh Sadhwani revealed that the company currently employs about 6,000 Ghanaians nationwide and is seeking to fill more than 100 vacant positions. However, he noted that the company has been struggling to recruit workers with the necessary skills for many of the available roles.

He explained that Melcom had been recruiting for months for technical positions such as gas technicians, electricians, welders, and plumbers but continues to face a significant shortage of skilled personnel.

Mr. Sadhwani added that the company’s production operations also require additional machine operators and other skilled staff, but many applicants lack the practical experience needed for the roles.

He noted that because the company relies on specialised machinery, it is difficult to employ applicants without the required experience, as operational errors could damage costly equipment and disrupt production.

The Managing Director further indicated that Melcom has been running some of its operations on a 24-hour basis for several years, yet staffing gaps remain across some of its facilities.

To support staff and ease commuting challenges, he said the company provides dormitory accommodation for some workers and operates a subsidised canteen, while also covering utilities such as water and electricity as part of its employee welfare package.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Royal Motors informed the Mayor that with the passage of the Okada Bill (Ghana), the company is ready to train interested applicants in motorcycle riding and is also open to employing more workers at its motorcycle assembly factory.
