BIRIM N: Stakeholders urged to help in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS

The Birim North District Chief Executive, Mr Remond Nana Damptey has called on relevant stakeholders to collaborate in reducing the increasing infection rate of HIV in the district.

He said HIV infections increased from 141 in 2017 to 225 in 2018 and described the situation as very worrying.

The DCE made the call at the first ordinary meeting of the fourth session of the sixth assembly of the Birim North District Assembly at New Abirem.

He said statistics indicated that the district capital, New Abirem had the highest infection rate in 2018 which is 155 as against 138 in 2017, whiles, Nkwarteng, a community that recorded one infection in 2017 had 39 infections in 2018.

Other communities are Akoase recording 19 infections in 2018 as against none in 2017, Tweapease recorded nine infections in 2018 against none in 2017, Afosu recorded three infections in 2018 against two in 2017 and Amuana Praso recorded three infections in 2018 as against none in 2017.

Mr Damptey urged the chiefs, parents, assembly members, and other stakeholders to help to reduce the spread of the menace in the district.

Yaw Badiako Kumi, a Government Appointee, advised parents to give proper care and attention to their children and urged teachers in the district to assume their leadership roles to help address the issues.

He called for more sensitization of parents and children so that some bad social vices which help promote HIV infections could be reduced in the communities.
