Chainsaws and Galamsey: Amenfi Central’s Struggle to Protect Forests and Water Bodies
Date Created : 12/2/2025 12:00:00 AM : Story Author : Ghanadistricts.com
The destructive practice of galamsey, particularly the “dig and wash” method along river bodies such as the Ankobra River, has left behind polluted waters, degraded lands, and devastated ecosystems.
In addition to mining, the unchecked activities of chainsaw operators in forest reserves including the Mamire Forest Reserve, Fure Headwaters Forest Reserve, and Bura River Forest Reserve are accelerating deforestation. These operations strip the district of vital forest cover, threatening biodiversity and undermining the ecological balance that sustains farming and livelihoods.
Local authorities face significant challenges in curbing these destructive practices. The lack of technical know-how among citizens in resource management, coupled with inadequate logistics for monitoring and enforcement, has made it difficult to protect the district’s natural wealth. Without stronger interventions, the district risks losing its forests, fertile lands, and clean water sources—resources that are essential for socio-economic development and community survival.
Environmental experts and community leaders are calling for urgent action to safeguard Amenfi Central’s resources. Investment in education, technical training, and monitoring systems, alongside stricter enforcement of environmental laws, could help reverse the damage and secure a sustainable future for the district.
Amenfi Central’s natural resources are its greatest asset, but unless immediate steps are taken, they may become its greatest loss.
