The commemoration, held on January 7, 2026, formed part of efforts to promote constitutional awareness and encourage citizens to appreciate the importance of the Constitution in safeguarding democracy, protecting fundamental human rights and guiding the governance of the country.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Suhum, Hon. Lydia Ohenewa Sarah, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to the principles enshrined in the Constitution and called on residents to familiarise themselves with their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

She stressed the importance of understanding constitutional provisions as a means of empowering individuals to participate meaningfully in democratic governance and contribute to the development of their communities.

Constitution Day, observed annually on January 7, commemorates the coming into force of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution on January 7, 1993. The Constitution provides the legal foundation for the country’s democratic system, defining the powers and responsibilities of the various arms of government while protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens.

The MCE’s message also highlighted the need for residents to respect the rule of law, fulfil their civic obligations and promote peaceful coexistence within their communities.

Understanding constitutional rights and responsibilities is essential to strengthening accountability, encouraging responsible citizenship and ensuring that individuals appreciate both the freedoms they enjoy and the duties expected of them.

The Suhum Municipal Assembly’s commemoration therefore served as an opportunity to encourage greater public awareness of the Constitution and reinforce the importance of protecting Ghana’s democratic values.
