Mahama Inspects Navrongo–Chuchuliga–Tumu Road, Assures Contractors of Funding

President John Dramani Mahama has inspected ongoing construction works on the Navrongo–Chuchuliga–Tumu Road, reaffirming government’s commitment to completing the strategic route linking the Upper East and Upper West Regions.

The inspection formed part of the President’s Resetting Ghana Tour of the Upper East Region and focused on the progress of the project being implemented under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme.

Speaking at Chuchuliga in the Builsa North Municipality, President Mahama said the road was crucial to improving connectivity between Bolgatanga and Wa, passing through Navrongo, Chuchuliga and Tumu.

He explained that the entire corridor had been divided into several lots and awarded to different contractors, with MyTurn Construction responsible for the Chuchuliga section.

President Mahama recalled that the project was initiated during his first administration, with the sod cut in 2016, but construction stalled after his government left office. He expressed satisfaction that work had resumed under the Big Push programme.

The President assured contractors that funding would not be a major obstacle to the execution of priority Big Push road projects, noting that certified payments would be processed to enable contractors to remain on site.

He also urged the contractor to maintain the current pace of work, expressing the hope that the Chuchuliga section would be completed in time for commissioning next year.

President Mahama further expressed optimism that by 2028, the full stretch from Chuchuliga to Wa would be completed, providing motorists with a smoother and safer route between the two regional capitals.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwami Governs Agbodza, disclosed that government had disbursed GH¢23.1 billion as of July 2026 to settle road contractors’ arrears and finance projects under the Big Push programme.

He said the government was addressing road challenges across constituencies and districts, with several contractors expected to return to construction sites in the coming months.

The Navrongo–Chuchuliga–Tumu corridor is expected to strengthen regional connectivity, improve transportation and support economic activities between the Upper East and Upper West Regions.
